Same menu and ownership as the Ed Dorado in Coralville, good buy for reasonably authentic Mexican food. I love their tamales.

This is good authentic Mexican food! They have great salsa and chips (free with order) and great white queso dip! They have a lunch menu and very quick service. Friendly staff too. Highly recommended. :-)

Private atmosphere with good food, reasonable prices, and attentive service. A nice hole-in-the-wall Mexican place I'll be sure to return to.

El Dorado is okay if you're rating it on the American-Mexican restaurant scale. It used to be a Diamond Dave's, and there's still a little of that sad, down-at-heel, dreary Wednesday afternoon atmosphere about the place. The owners have tried to counteract that with the usual array of decorative elements - sombreros, "Mexican" folk art and such - and it's certainly a lot livelier than Dave's typically was. (In fact, last time I was there, one of the younger waiters was demonstrating American football tackles in the middle of the restaurant, which was rather disconcerting at first, and eventually just annoying.) And of course, there's all the usual birthday serenade shenanigans. For what it is, El Dorado is fine. I understand that it's a business, and that they need to make money by selling food that people want to eat. It's just so sad that this and pretty much every other restaurant in the category, of which there are plenty around here, features exactly none of Mexico's best dishes. The staples, which could potentially be pretty good, are more often than not smothered in cheese-product sauce, and the salsas are universally bland and drastically underseasoned. The only really authentic element is the watery, tasteless Mexican beer. You can't eat tongue or cabeza here, there's no menudo, and everything just seems to roll off a factory line in back. At least it's hot and gets to the table pretty quickly. On the plus side, my kids like it, which makes sense because it's bland, inoffensive and offers nothing new - pretty much the definition of successful kids' cuisine. I'll give them three stars for being no worse than any of the other identikit American-Mexican places in town.

They have a pretty good super burrito here, and the service is good. My son is 6 and he loves the people there - they always give him extra attention. Their prices are fair and the food comes quick. Portion sizes are large like they should be at a Mexican joint. It's the closest Mexican to my house, and usually the easy pick for a mid-week south of the border feast. If you want a casual meal for the family, it fits the bill.

This restaurant is one of the best in the state. Mexican food is rarely photogenic, but without fail our plates look, smell, and taste amazing. We usually order a few tacos and enchiladas a la cart, and an entree platter. Then there are the drinks. We've tried both the daiquiris and margaritas, and they are both great. Environmentally it's a little sad, to see such a great restaurant in such a dead mall, but it means it's like a hidden gem that is never over crowded. I highly recommend El Dorado, it's amazing the flavor they can produce in even a simple taco.

El Dorado is an east side gem. I've eaten at El Dorado many times when I am hungry for Mexican home cooking. The food and service has been consistently good. El Dorado typically offers coupons through Value-Pak - both by mail and online. But even without the coupons El Dorado is still a good value for your hard-earned $. I've tried a number of menu items and some of my recent favorites include: Flautas - 3 Flour tortillas filled with steak, fried golden brown, drizzled with queso, served with a guacamole salad with pico de gallo, and sour cream. Great mix of textures and flavors. Carne Asada - Two steaks, rice, beans, guacamole salad, jalepenos, and three tortillas. I always end up bringing leftovers home. Carnitas - Slow roasted pork tips with rice, beans, guacamole salad, jalepenos, and three tortillas. I always end up bringing leftovers home.

Another outing with Peeps at work. Since I was out with el jefe, I couldn't get any margaritas. That means that, I am giving this place an honest sober rating without the alcohol goggles. The food is better than the other Mex place across town off Hwy 6. The portions are pretty decent and the chips are warm. All we needed tonight night is a mariachi band and some spicy latinas to bring us back to the streets of Los Angeles. I had the fish tacos. They were pretty good, except they didn't tell me that I was going to be breathing fire on its way down and then tomorrow on its way out. But why am I complaining.. I love heat! Some of my friends had the seafood fajita and chicken enchilada. They looked pretty good, but you can't judge a Mexican by its cover. Roses with thorns! Mexican food, like their women, must not be judged by its looks, but by how it tastes. So, next time, I'm going to have to taste it to really put it to the test; the food that is. For now, I think this place deserves another try. To be continued...

We went to the Sycamore Mall location on a Sat night. Between the two of us we tried chimichangas, enchiladas, tacos, refried beans and rice. We found the food to be just ok. Food was fresh & hot, but not real flavorable. Service was friendly and prompt. We're new to the area and this is the first Mexican restaurant we've tried, so maybe it is better than others.

A GREAT Mexican restaurant. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. Same owners as El Dorado in Coraville but I prefer this one much better. Food is somewhat similar to El Ranchero but El Dorado has a much more festive and laid back atmosphere. It would have hthe closest thing to a cantina in the midwest outside of chi-town. There's a mariachi band sometimes. The staff is very friendly. We usually get a single fajitas (enough for two people), jumbo margarita and a 32oz Dox XX...for less than $24!!! There is absolutely no place you will find a better deal on drinks (32 oz Dos XX for $4...that's 32! not 23 or 24oz). The marg is pretty dang good for a well marg. The food is pretty authentic and not friend and smothered in fat drenched sauce like the typical Mid-West Mexican. If you live in IC feel lucky...I've been hunting for years for a decent Mexican place and you got so many in IC within miles of each other.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
